The partial solar eclipse - or surya grahan - is believed to be a period of engaging oneself in activities that elevate one’s body and mind, according to Ayurvedic principles. Within the spectrum of Hindu traditions, common belief states that the time of the eclipse is when negative energies are active, which in turn, affects digestion and health. While the absence of direct sunlight is linked to encouraging bacterial growth in food that has been left out, it is also advised to not consume food a couple of hours preceding to the time when the celestial event commences. In addition to avoiding consumption, leftover food is also discarded once the event has ended - signifying getting rid of any and all ‘polluted’ items. While there isn’t any fixed set of guidelines to follow in the context of the types of foods to consume or avoid around the time, it is advisable to opt for a sattvic diet to aid easy digestion and nutrient absorption.

Turmeric Milk

Also known as golden milk, the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric are believed to benefit the drinker by boosting immunity and detoxifying the body, while also improving blood circulation and improving cholesterol levels. Moreover, the calcium-rich beverage improves the quality of sleep, during the time when rest is imperative and individuals are meant to remain largely inactive as the eclipse occurs. Turmeric milk is also meant to support liver function and slow down early signs of ageing.

Thick-Skinned Fruit

Fruits such as bananas, melon and oranges - which are purportedly less susceptible to external contamination, are best consumed around the time of the solar eclipse. Their natural protective layer shields them from environmental toxins and harmful radiation, while also being easier to peel or cut through, making it convenient to discard any affected layers - while also being rich in vitamins and essential nutrients that are suitable for a time of abstinence.

Food With Tulsi Leaves

Aside from its sacred properties, it is believed that the adaptogens present in the leaves of the holy basil aid in balancing cortisol levels, soothing anxiety and enabling mental clarity. Beyond this, the anti-microbial and antioxidant properties of the plant help with slowing down the spoilage of dairy products like milk and curd, as well as infuse drinking water with medicinal properties.

Sprouts & Legumes

The fibre and protein-rich sprouts in their raw or cooked form, along with legumes are loaded with plenty of essential nutrients, are easy on the stomach and dense - making it difficult for them to spoil easily or turn ‘impure’. Their inability to ferment easily or quickly and need to cook them minimally allows them to sustain for a longer period of time, leaving the eater feeling satiated for longer, while helping curb cravings or unnecessary snacking.

Foods To Avoid

Leafy Vegetables

Typically, leafy greens and salads are avoided due to their susceptibility to turn contaminated or decay rapidly. It is believed that when the environment is disrupted by unstable energy, it increases the risk of microbial growth in delicate raw foods - case in point being the leafy vegetables which fail to come with a protective layer that can be peeled, much like thick-skinned fruits.

Non-Vegetarian Dishes

The exact opposite of what constitutes as sattvic, meat, fish, eggs and poultry are believed to hold tamasic energy and are slower to digest in comparison. Additionally, food cooked with animal products (including dairy) are prone to spoilage, making it difficult for sensitive digestive systems to assimilate and process during the time of an eclipse. Moreover, tradition also dictates that animal harm should be avoided during a time when negative energies are higher - choosing to remain of calm mind and demeanour instead.

Alcohol/Caffeinated Drinks

While it is generally advisable to steer clear off of intoxicants during the time of a solar eclipse, consuming alcohol, tea or coffee is considered to dull the mind and slow down bodily functions - as opposed to making one feel functional and active. These substances also overstimulate the nervous system, increasing a sense of restlessness and straining digestion, while also dehydrating the body significantly. Caffeine also becomes detrimental to a healthy sleep cycle, which is crucial for when one must upkeep all bodily functions and aid detoxification.

Fermented Food

Dishes like idli, dosa, kimchi or pickles are largely associated with encouraging gut microbes and undergoing natural fermentation throughout. While this might be seen as an advantage on regular days, these foods tend to turn ‘unstable’ during the time of an eclipse. Fermented foods are also prone to spoilage, with the risk of harmful bacterial overgrowth and rapid decay.
