Lohri 2023: Foods That Take The Centerstage
As celebrations abound in Northern India for the festival of Lohri, one cannot help but notice the aroma of delicious cuisine emanating from Indian kitchens. In North India, the harvest festival is observed as Lohri. The harvest season has traditionally been one of the most important times of the year in India, a country with a large agro-based economy. Lohri commemorates the rabi crop harvest, which refers to winter-sown crops. Getting together with family, providing food to the sacred fire, and enjoying a spectacular feast like chikki, makke ki roti, sarso ka saag, etc. are all central to Lohri.

Chikki
One of the most popular Lohri sweets is the delicious peanut and crunchy jaggery chikki. Besides the most popular groundnut chikki, there are a number of other types of chikkis. Like til ki chikki, which is a type of dry fruit chikki made of chunky nuts like cashews, almonds, and pistachios embedded in brittle jaggery's sweet base.
Popcorn
In Punjabi winters are not solely governed by til and gur. A significant component of the winter cuisine is makkai, or corn. One of the most popular Lohri foods is popcorn, also known as phulle. A large bonfire is also thrown with popcorn.
Til Ka Ladoo
One Lohri treat that is enjoyed long after Lohri is ended is the delicate, traditional wintersweet prepared with jaggery and roasted sesame seeds. Large batches of these ladoos are made, and they have a longer shelf life. Throughout January and the beginning of February, ladoos are consumed after being preserved in airtight containers.
Gajak
A class of sweets known as gajak is often a sesame and sugar or jaggery-based confection. The words "chikki" and "gajak" are frequently used to refer to the same food. Gur ki chikki and gur gajak are similar in many ways. Sesame seeds and white sugar are used to make the Safed gajak, which is also a crucial component of the festivities.
Rewri
We're not lying when we tell that this bite-sized sesame and brittle sugar snack is hard to stop eating. After having only one of them, nobody has ever been able to restrain themselves. One of the most popular meals to be thrown into the fire is rewri, along with popcorn and peanuts.
